Kicking Up The Dirt - Race Season 2018-2019 Awards Night
Joanne White posted Sunday June 30, 2019.
The drivers, crews, family, sponsors and supporters of Sprintcars Queensland gathered last night at Hotel Grand Chancellor in Brisbane to celebrate not only what was one our best seasons to date but to celebrate the achievements of the people who made the race season everything it was.
Wade Aunger again served as our MC for the night and started the awards with a Major Sponsor Award for Dave Horrell and East Coast Logistics. East Coast Logistics have been supporters of the sport and Sprintcars Queensland for a very long time, sponsoring the East Coast Logistics Sprintcar Series at Archerfield Speedway, and their contribution is absolutely invaluable. Furthermore they have already pledged their support for next season and will again bring us the East Coast Logistics Sprintcar Series at Archerfield for the 2019-2020 race season.
Likewise, Queensland Speedway Spares and Bill Mann have made enormous contributions to the sport of Speedway and to Sprintcars Queensland. The landscape of Australian Speedway would not be the same without Bill Mann and Queensland Speedway Spares and we are grateful for their continued and invaluable support. Jason Greenwood accepted the award on behalf of the Queensland Speedway Spares team.
Special Thanks also went to our Associate Sponsors. Without the support from people and companies like Ken and Wendy McNamara from KRE, Ken and Kaye Thorne from Myla Graphics, Clem Hoffmans from Spanloc Tools and Brent Kratzmann from BK Trading, this season could not have been as remarkable as it was. We thank each of these people for their continued and invaluable support.
Two of our on track officials, Glenn Wilson and Dan Roberts, along with media correspondent Joanne White, were recognised for their volunteer efforts to support the club again this past season. Glenn and Dan play such a huge part behind the scenes making sure each race meeting runs as smoothly as possible, organising the drivers and trying to make sure everyone is ready their events, before heading infield to act as our crash crew and being first on scene when the crashes do happen. They dedicate so much time and energy to our club, along with some of our other volunteers who could not be with us last night, and we at Sprintcars Queensland are all incredibly grateful for their efforts. Whilst he was unable to be with us last night, thanks must also go to Chris Dvorak, who, after seven incredible years a crash crew volunteer, has finished up with the club. His years of service and passion for the sport are endlessly appreciated and we wish Chris and his family the very best for what lies ahead.
The USC Series held at Hi-Tec Oils Speedway in Toowoomba was a truly noteworthy series of breath-taking Sprintcar racing. Robbie Farr and Lachlan McHugh (both of who were absent last night) took out the top two positions, with Andrew Scheuerle, Peter Lack and Brent Kratzmann rounding out the top five.
Thanks must also go to Kirsty Kelly and her partner Sean, as well as a few others who helped with ticket sales in the 50/50 raffles this season. Money raised from the raffles this year was in excess of $21,000 while Gary Kratzmann certainly deserves a special mention for purchasing $50 worth of tickets at every event.
The top fifteen drivers and teams in the East Coast Logistics Series were congratulated on a massive and impressive season.

Rookie of the Year this year went to Ryan McNamara while this years very deserving winner of the Most Improved Driver was Kristy Bonsey. Gary Leeson took out Crew Member of the Year, while Brent Kratzmann and his team on the always immaculately presented Q2 racer took out Best Presented Car and Crew. Libby Ellis was this years recipient of the Encouragement Award, while a series of spectacular crashes in the last half of the season saw Luke Oldfield walk away with the Wings Award. Mitch Gowland, despite having his best season to date and contesting more A-Mains than in previous years, also took out the B-Main points, while Andrew Scheuerle was again a model of consistency in his heats to take home the Heat Race Points Championship. This years Driver’s Driver award, voted for on the night by all of the drivers present, was Dave Whell.
The Sprintcars Queensland Club Championship saw Brent Kratzmann come home in third place, after strong performances in both Brisbane and Toowoomba, while Peter Lack finished second, a well deserved result for his final season in the drivers seat. A special video package was played to highlight the incredible and long racing career of Lack and to thank him for all that he has contributed to this sport over the years. While Lack is stepping out of the drivers seat he will still be involved in the GW Racing operation going forward. Andrew Scheuerle again took out of Club Championship, topping off what was truly a remarkable season for Andrew, his family and his team.
We must also thank John and Kathy Kelly at Archerfield Speedway, Barry and Felicity Waldron at Hi-Tec Oils Toowoomba Speedway and Stewart Craig and the Ausdeck Group for their continued support. John and Kathy Kelly, on top of their commitments at both Ausdeck Archerfield Speedway and Hi-Tec Oils Speedway, and their duties with Speedway Australia are absolutely invaluable in their roles within Sprintcars Queensland. They do so very much for our sport and our club and have had, and continue to have, such a profound impact on Sprintcar Racing in Queensland. Their passion and dedication to this sport is unparalleled and we are so very fortunate to have people like John and Kathy in our club.
Thank you too to all the people and organisations that contributed the many raffle prizes on offer last night, in addition to those provided by Sprintcars Queensland. Oldfield Racing, JTR Racing, Ausdeck Patios and Roofing, John and Kathy Kelly, BHR Fabrications, Queensland Speedway Spares, Donny Schatz and Pattemore Meats and Libby Ellis.
Thank you also to all the partners, families, volunteers, sponsors, fans and supporters who all contribute so much to our sport and our season. There are untold amounts of people who make a great number of sacrifices (time, money and effort) so that our drivers can go out on the track and have some fun. This is truly a team sport and the support networks behind our drivers are the ones that, together, make all of this possible. None of our drivers can do what they do without the support of those behind the scenes and so, to all those who make it possible for each of our drivers to hit the track, thank you.
And that race fans wraps up our 2019-2020 race season. It has arguably been one of the best seasons to date and with plans already in place and underway for next season, we are all looking forward to another bigger and better year of Sprintcar Racing. Several of our drivers will also be (or already are) contesting some races in American during our winter break and we wish them a safe, successful and fun trip. Next season for us will officially kick off in September and we hope to see you all trackside when the things with wings return to the track.
