Kicking Up The Dirt - USC Queensland Grand Final
Joanne White posted Sunday April 3, 2016.

Last night twenty-four Sprintcars headed to Hi-Tec Oils Toowoomba Speedway for the Ultimate Pink Night, supporting and raising money for Breast Cancer research, and the final night of the Queensland Ultimate Sprintcar Championship. James McFadden was strong all night, setting quick time in qualifying and leading the points going into the Shoot Out events, before earning pole position for the start of the A-Main. Unfortunately for McFadden contact with David Murcott on the opening lap of the A-Main ended his night early and sent Murcott to the rear of the field for the 30-lap A-Main event. Jamie Veal took the win at the end of the action-packed race, with Robbie Farr in second ahead of Bryan Mann, with Peter Lack and Jake Tranter rounding out the top five. Robbie Farr won the Queensland Ultimate Sprintcar Championship, with Peter Lack in second and Andrew Scheuerle securing third overall.

When qualifying got underway it was James McFadden who topped the leader board, stopping the clock at a very quick 10.773 seconds. Robbie Farr was second quickest with a 10.895 second lap. Peter Lack was third quickest, beating Jamie Veal by just 0.004 seconds. Mitchell Gee rounded out the fastest five, while Brent Kratzmann, who qualified in sixth, beat Bryan Mann by just one thousandth of a second. Jake Tranter qualified in eighth while the difference between Matt Dumesny and Darren Jensen, for the final two positions in the top ten, was just two thousandths of a second. Kevin Titman beat Dave Whell by just one thousandth of a second and while McFadden and Farr were the only cars to break into the 10-second bracket, the top nineteen cars were separated by less than one second.

Heat one started with James McFadden and Brent Kratzmann from the front row with McFadden quickly getting the jump on the start and settling into the race lead. Dan Murray settled into a comfortable third but soon came under pressure from Kevin Titman. Mid-field Bryan Mann and Mitchell Gee had a brilliant race, keeping the crowd entertained. James McFadden went on to take the win, a little over five seconds ahead of Brent Kratzmann in second. Dan Murray finished in third and led Kevin Titman, Bryan Mann, Brandon Rawlings, Brent Aprile and Dave Whell across the line.

Heat two started with Robbie Farr and Mitchell Gee from the front row, with Jake Tranter and David Murcott right behind. Farr got the jump on the start with Gee settling into second while Jake Tranter tried to hold off Murcott for third. Murcott slipped under Tranter but the race was quickly brought under caution when Michael Saller spun to a stop. Farr led the restart while Saller tried to make his way forward from the rear of the field. Andrew Scheuerle put all kinds of pressure on Tranter before finally managing to slip through and make his way closer to the front of the field and set his sights on Murcott. Robbie Farr went on to take the win ahead of Mitchell Gee, David Murcott, Andrew Scheuerle, Jake Tranter, Anthony Lambert, Michael Saller and Kristy Bonsey.

Heat three started with Peter Lack and Jamie Veal from the front row. Veal got the jump on the start but officials quickly brought the race under caution. Officials deemed Lack to have held back on the start and relegated him to the second row for the restart. This handed pole position to Matt Dumesny, but it was still Jamie Veal who got the jump when the race resumed. Veal quickly set about opening a sizable lead over his rivals while Darren Jensen slipped under Lack and Dumesny, with Lack then racing under Dumesny as well and chasing after Jensen. Dumesny was then left to try and defend his position from Danny Reidy, with Reidy all over the back of Dumesnys’ car. Reidy slipped underneath Dumesny, only for Dumesny to fight back on the high side to maintain his position. Reidy raced back underneath to finally cement his position in front of Dumesny. Jamie Veal went on to take the win, some half a lap ahead of the rest of the field. Darren Jensen finished second ahead of Danny Reidy, Lachlan McHugh, Matt Dumesny, Peter Lack, Steven Johnson and Scott Genrich.

Heat four saw Brent Apile and David Whell share the front row with Kevin Titman and Brandon Rawlings from row two. Brent Aprile got the jump on the start with Titman getting a brilliant start from the second row. The race was quickly brought under caution though, with officials deeming Aprile to have jumped the start, handing pole position for the restart to Titman. Whell and Titman raced side-by-side into the first two corers, with Whell eventually managing to secure the race lead. James McFadden slid under Bryan Mann before turning his attention to Kevin Titman and trying to slip under Titman’s Q59 racer a lap later. McFadden put all kinds of pressure on Titman, while Bryan Mann closed in on McFadden, working the highline beautifully and searching for the right way through. McFadden was absolutely relentless on the tail of Titman, while Mann stayed close enough to strike if the opportunity arose. McFadden slid underneath Titman with barely a lap left to run, with Bryan Mann and Kevin Titman virtually side-by-side as they crossed the line. David Whell got the win ahead of James McFadden, with Bryan Mann only just beating Kevin Titman to the line. Titman finished fourth and led Brandon Rawlings, Brent Aprile, Brent Kratzmann and Dan Murray home.

Kristy Bonsey started heat five from pole position with Anthony Lambert alongside and Andrew Scheuerle and Michael Saller right behind. Bonsey got a great start but was quickly swallowed by the rest of the field. Lambert took control of the race, while Andrew Scheuerle held down second, but immediately came under pressure from David Murcott. Further back in the field Robbie Farr and Mitchell Gee were having a brilliant battle, with Farr sliding underneath Gee, only for Gee to slide straight back under Farr. Just as Farr was attempting to slide back underneath Gee in turn four, Gee got a fraction too sideways and the pair came together, spinning to a stop and bringing the race under caution. Both restarted at the rear while Anthony Lambert led the restart. David Murcott wasted no time sliding under Scheuerle and setting out after Lambert with two and a half laps left to run. Murcott managed to slip under Lambert in turn four to steal the lead, while further back in the field Mitchell Gee and Michael Saller battled for the minor positions. David Murcott took the win from Anthony Lambert, Andrew Scheuerle, Jake Tranter, Robbie Farr, Mitchell Gee, Michael Saller and Kristy Bonsey.

The sixth and final heat of the night saw Scott Genrich and Steven Johnson share the front row, with Johnson getting the jump early and quickly securing the race lead. Lachlan McHugh settled into second while Danny Reidy and Matt Dumesny battled mid-field. Genrich had a spin in turn four and brought the race under caution, restarting the Q37 racer at the rear of the field while Johnson led McHugh, Dumesny, Reidy, Darren Jensen, Peter Lack and Jamie Veal to the green. Johnson got a brilliant start, quickly opening a comfortable lead while Reidy put all kinds of pressure on Dumesny with seven laps left to run. Lack was all over the back of Jensen, while Jamie Veal started to make his way forward, sliding under Lack and setting his sights on Jensen. At the front of the field Lachlan McHugh was closing in on Johnson, soon sliding under Johnson as they raced through turn one. Johnson quickly pulled out of the race, mechanical issues stopping him from completing the ten-lap journey. Jamie Veal was all over the back of Danny Reidy, but it was Lachlan McHugh who took the win ahead of Matt Dumesny, Danny Reidy, Jamie Veal, Peter Lack, Darren Jensen and Scott Genrich. Steven Johnson did not finish the event.

The top eight shootout started with a match race between Bryan Mann and Brent Kratzmann. Mann got the jump on the start and while Kratzmann tried to fight back Mann was able to hang on to the advantage and take the win. Kratzmann was relegated to the infield while Mann was joined on track by David Murcott for the second Shoot Out event. Mann pulled a massive wheel stand as they took the green, while Murcott took control of the race. Murcott was unstoppable out in front and took the win, with Peter Lack to take Mann’s place on the track. Murcott quickly took the lead and while Lack put up a strong fight there was nothing he could do to get in front of Murcott. Murcott again took the win and progressed to the next shoot out event, where he was joined on track by Mitchell Gee. Gee got a great start in the Q41 racer but Murcott was still able to secure the lead, opening a comfortable lead over Gee. Jamie Veal was next to try his luck against Murcott, with Veal leading the way into turn one. Unfortunately for Veal officials pulled the race up, deeming him to have jumped the start, thus handing the win to Murcott. Farr was next to challenge Murcott, but he too jumped the start and handed the win to Murcott. James McFadden, as the highest points scorer of the night, joined Murcott on track for the battle to determine who would start the A-Main from pole position. McFadden got the jump on the start and quickly settled into the race lead. Murcott chased hard but was unable to stop McFadden from taking the win.

Eight cars lined up for the ten-lap B-Main event, with Kevin Titman and David Whell from the front row. Michael Saller and Anthony Lambert shared the second row of the grid with Brent Aprile, Scott Genrich, Kristy Bonsey and Steven Johnson rounding out the starting grid. Titman got a great start with Whell settling into second while Lambert held down third but immediately came under pressure from Saller. Titman was way out in front with a healthy margin back to second but Saller had a big look under Lambert only for Saller to spin in turn four and bring the race under caution. Titman led the restart from Whell, Lambert, Aprile and Johnson, with Aprile keen to make his way forward all the while defending his position from a hard charging Johnson. Aprile was all over the back of Lambert as they argued over third and fourth, both putting on a spectacular show for the large crowd on the hill. Aprile finally managed to get past Lambert, leaving Lambert and Johnson to fight over the final transfer position, while Aprile closed in on Whell. Kevin Titman took the win ahead of Brent Aprile, David Whell with Anthony Lambert managing to hang on to finish fourth and secure the final transfer to the back of the A-Main event. Steven Johnson finished fifth and led Michael Saller, Scott Genrich and Kristy Bonsey across the line.

James McFadden and David Murcott shared the front row for the start of the 30-lap A-Main event, with Robbie Farr and Jamie Veal out of the second row, and Mitchell Gee and Peter Lack competing the front three rows. McFadden got the initial jump when the lights went green but Murcott fought back hard on the inside. Heading through turn four two abreast at the end of the first lap, contact between the pair when Murcott drifted up track saw McFadden invert the NQ25 racer after heavy contact with the fence. While McFadden was able to walk away from the wreck, his race was very prematurely over. Murcott restarted from the rear of the field, with Robbie Farr now from pole position with Jamie Veal alongside.

Robbie Farr got the jump second time around, but Jamie Veal was quick to respond on the high side, quickly taking control of the race and immediately starting to open a comfortable lead, with Farr in second and Mitchell Gee in third. Unfortunately with only a couple of laps completed the race was brought under caution for Kevin Titman who had spun to a stop on the bottom of the race track.

Jamie Veal led the restart from Robbie Farr, Mitchell Gee, Bryan Mann and Brent Kratzmann, but Kratzmann soon found himself under immense pressure from Jake Tranter. Matt Dumesny soon joined the battle with Kratzmann and Tranter, the trio really putting on a spectacular show for race fans, while Peter Lack took to the high line to try and find a way forward. Within five laps the leaders were approaching lapped traffic, with Farr beginning to close the gap to race leader Veal as Veal patiently began making his way through the back markers. Mitchell Gee was quickly closing in on Farr, but when he ran a fraction too high just once, Bryan Mann closed the gap and began really challenging for position. Before long though the race was under caution once more, with Mitchell Gee, Dan Murray and Brent Kratzmann tangled and stopped on the race track. Murray and Gee were both unable to restart, while Kratzmann was forced to the rear of the field.

Jamie Veal led the restart from Robbie Farr, Bryan Mann and Jake Tranter. On each restart Veal was simply magnificent and quickly began pulling away from the rest of the field. Brent Kratzmann began trying to climb his way back through the field, racing past both Kevin Titman and Brent Aprile, as the race leaders began to close in on lapped traffic once more. Veal spent several laps trying to find a way past Titman, while Bryan Mann and Peter Lack had a brilliant battle for third and fourth. Andrew Scheuerle slowed to a stop in turn four, a rare mechanical problem on board the Q25 racer enough to prematurely end his race.

Jamie Veal again led the restart and again quickly pulled ahead of Robbie Farr. Bryan Mann and Peter Lack resumed their battle, only this time they were joined by a hard-charging Jake Tranter, while further back in the field Danny Reidy and Darren Jensen had a great battle amongst themselves. Jamie Veal went on to take the win with Robbie Farr and Bryan Mann joining him on the podium and Peter Lack and Jake Tranter rounding out the top five. Matt Dumesny finished an impressive sixth with Lachlan McHugh in seventh despite a damaged front wing. David Murcott managed to work his way back into eighth and led Danny Reidy, Darren Jensen, Brandon Rawlings, Brent Kratzmann, Kevin Titman and Brent Aprile across the line. Andrew Scheuerle, Anthony Lambert, Mitchell Gee, Dan Murray, David Whell and James McFadden all failed to finish the event.

That also brings an end to the 2015-2016 Queensland Ultimate Sprintcar Championship. Robbie Farr was the official series winner, with Peter Lack second and Andrew Scheuerle managing third despite his failure to finish last nights A-Main event.

Sprintcars Queensland will return to AusDeck Patios Archerfield Speedway next Saturday night, 09 April 2016, for Round two of the East Coast Logistics Crispy Memorial Sprintcar Series. Get yourself trackside next Saturday night to see all the action for yourself!
