Kicking Up The Dirt - SuperCheap Auto Track Championship-Round 13
Joanne White posted Sunday March 20, 2016.

Last night 27 Sprintcars contested the thirteenth and final round of the SuperCheap Auto Sprintcar Series at AusDeck Patios Archerfield Speedway, with defending Champion Bryan Mann taking the win at the end of the 30-lap Feature event. Kevin Titman and Peter Lack joined Mann on the podium after a gruelling and intense race long battle for the lead. Rain across the venue moments before the race meeting got underway left a very hooky and somewhat one lane racetrack and while Mann initially held a slender lead over his rivals, once he got caught behind lapped traffic both Titman and Lack really closed in and put on a spectacular show for fans as the trio argued over the lead. Andrew Scheuerle, who was already so far in front in the SuperCheap Auto Sprintcar Series that he was unbeatable regardless of what happened on the final night of competition, crossed the line in a very consistent fourth, with Scott Doyle having a very impressive run to finish fifth.

Two showers of rain before the meeting started forced the cancellation of time trials, with Sprintcars Queensland resorting to a draw and invert format to try and make up lost time. Heat one started with Brent Kratzmann and Anthony Lambert from the front row, with Kratzmann getting a brilliant start from pole position and quickly securing the race lead. Kevin Titman, who had started from position three, immediately raced up the inside of Lambert as they headed into the first corner. Lambert tired to fight back on the outside but Titman managed to secure second by the time they hit turn two. Andrew Scheuerle, who was elevated to fifth when Dave Fanning pulled out of the race before taking the green, got a great start on the low line and slipped straight under Brad Ayers as they raced through turn three for the first time. Dave Whell slipped past Ayers when he ran too wide exiting turn three, while Andrew Scheuerle began closing in on Anthony Lambert. Kratzmann was very comfortable out in front while Titman closed in when the race leader got caught behind lapped traffic on a very narrow one-lane racetrack. Titman challenged for the lead on several occasions but it was Brent Kratzmann who went on to take the win. Kevin Titman crossed the line in second with Anthony Lambert hanging on to finish third. Andrew Scheuerle was fourth home ahead of Dave Whell, Brad Ayers, Kristy Bonsey and Garry Jacobson. Dave Fanning pulled out of the event before taking the green.

Richard Morgan and Luke Oldfield shared the front row for the start of heat two, with young guns Mitchell Gee and Lachlan McHugh right behind. Morgan and Oldfield raced side-by-side into the first corner but it was Oldfield who managed to secure the race lead by the time they entered turn two. McHugh was quick to follow on the high side, racing around the outside of Morgan through turn two, down the back straight and into turn three. Morgan fought hard to maintain his position, but McHugh stole second before they entered turn four. Further back in the field Dan Murray chased the tail of Scott Doyle, searching for a way past, whist managing to stay a couple of car lengths ahead of Rob Hamilton. Oldfield soon caught the back markers, and, after a couple of laps, managed to slip underneath Hamilton, only for McHugh, who had now significantly closed the gap to the race leader, to immediately take to the high line and race around Hamiltons’ Q11 racer as they sped down the back straight. Richard Morgan and Mitchell Gee had a thrilling battle mid-field, with Morgan managing to stay ahead of the Q41 racer despite the best efforts of Gee on a narrow track. Luke Oldfield went on to take the win ahead of Lachlan McHugh and Richard Morgan, with Mitchell Gee, Dale Shilleto, Callum Walker, Scott Doyle, Dan Murray and Rob Hamilton rounding out the finishers.

Paul Rooks, last night driving the Q47 usually piloted by Andrew Liebke, was supposed to start heat three from pole position but elected the start rear of the field after mechanical problems prevented him from completing hot laps earlier in the night. This left Bryan Mann from pole with Mark Pholi alongside, and Peter Lack and Steven Johnson from the second row. The first start was aborted, officials deeming Pholi to have jumped the start and relegated him to the second row for the start. Johnson was elevated to the front row, alongside Mann as the field took the green for the second time. Mann and Johnson raced side-by-side into the first corner, but it was Johnson who took control of the race lead and built a small but comfortable margin by the time they exited turn two. Mann settled into second ahead of Pholi and Lack, but with the race barely a lap old the red lights were on for the upturned car of Pholi in turn one. Pholi walked away from the wreck but would be unable to restart the race. Johnson led the restart from Mann, Lack and Brandon Rawlings, and while Rawlings and Lack had a great battle for the minor positions, further back in the field Clem Hoffmans was searching for a way past Andrew Marks. Rawlings managed to slip underneath Lack, only for Lack, who last night ran Q5 for the first time, to immediately fight back to regain his position. Steven Johnson went on to take the win ahead of Bryan Mann, Peter Lack, Brandon Rawlings, Andrew Marks, Clem Hoffmans, Paul Rooks and Darren Silcock. Mark Pholi did not finish the race.

Heat four started with Dave Whell and Andrew Scheuerle from the front row and Kristy Bonsey and Dave Fanning out of row two. Scheuerle got the jump on the start and quickly started opening a sizable lead over the rest of the field, while Whell settled into second ahead of Fanning and Kevin Titman. At the rear of the field Brent Kratzmann searched high and low for a way past Anthony Lambert and Brad Ayers, losing a position, albeit briefly, to Garry Jacobson in the opening couple of laps. As Kratzmann focused on catching and finding a way past Lambert, Brad Ayers was busy searching for a way in front of Kristy Bonsey, all the while Lambert and Kratzmann were closing in. Kratzmann had a big look up the inside of Lambert in turn four, but got caught in the water on the bottom edge of the track, losing a little ground as he tried to find traction once more. It only took Kratzmann a couple of laps to close the gap to Lambert again before quickly racing up the inside of the Q90 racer as they headed down the back straight on the final lap. Kratzmann had Ayers within striking distance but with only half a lap left to run he simply ran out of time. Andrew Scheuerle went on to take the win, nearly half a lap ahead of second placed Dave Whell. Kevin Titman eventually managed to make his way in front of Dave Fanning to secure third, with Fanning officially fourth. Kristy Bonsey drove a great race to finish an impressive fifth after two months on the side-lines, with Brad Ayers, Brent Kratzmann Anthony Lambert and Garry Jacobson rounding out the finishers.

Scott Doyle and Dan Murray led the start of heat five, with Callum Walker and Dale Shilleto from the second row. Murray got a brilliant start from the front row and quickly secured the race lead when the lights went green. Doyle settled into second ahead of Shilleto and Mitchell Gee while both Lachlan McHugh and Luke Oldfield searched for a way past Callum Walker. McHugh ran around the outside of Walker as they raced through turn two, setting out after Mitchell Gee and Dale Shilleto. Gee slipped straight underneath Shilleto as they rounded turn four, with McHugh following half a lap later. Oldfield found his way past Walker, with both Oldfield and Walker making their way in front of Shilleto when Shilleto ran too wide in turn three. Shilleto fought back boldly on the high side, regaining his position from Walker, but Oldfield had already started to pull away as he closed the gap to McHugh. McHugh was slowly closing in on Mitchell Gee, as Gee tried to find a way past Scott Doyle, when McHugh got too high in turn three, getting over the cushion and inverting the NQ23 racer as he rolled across the track and into the catch fence exiting turn three. McHugh walked away unscathed though there was a lot of work for his crew to do to repair the car. Dan Murray led the restart with eight laps left to run and Scott Doyle on his tail. Mitchell Gee and Luke Oldfield battled for third and fourth, with Oldfield soon slipping underneath Gee when he ran just a fraction too wide in turn four. Oldfield eventually caught the tail of Doyle, and managed to get close enough to challenge for second in the closing laps of the race, but could not quite get the job done before the fall of the chequered flag. Dan Murray took the win ahead of Scott Doyle and Luke Oldfield, with Mitchell Gee in fourth and leading Dale Shilleto, Callum Walker and Rob Hamilton across the line. Lachlan McHugh and Richard Morgan failed to finish the event.

The sixth and final heat of the night saw Peter Lack from pole position with Andrew Marks alongside and Bryan Mann and Brandon Rawlings from row two. Lack got the jump on the start and quickly settled into the race lead, while Marks held down second ahead of Mann. Brandon Rawlings and Paul Rooks raced side-by-side into turn one, with Rawlings on the outside able to secure the advantage by the time they exited turn two, leaving Rooks to defend his position from a hard charging Steven Johnson. Mann searched for a way past Marks but ran too wide in turn three, opening the door for Rawlings and Rooks to slip through. Mann quickly fought back, regaining his position from Rooks as they raced down the main straight, and set about closing the gap to Rawlings. Meanwhile Rawlings was focused on catching Marks, eventually sliding underneath the Q96 racer in turn two with a little over a lap and half to run. Peter Lack went on to take the win with Brandon Rawlings in second and Andrew Marks in third. Bryan Mann crossed the line in fourth and led Paul Rooks, Steven Johnson and Clem Hoffmans across the line. Darren Silcock did not finish the race.

The top six Dash event was next up and while Luke Oldfield entered the event as the highest point scorer of the evening, the pre-Dash draw saw him inadvertently invert the entire six-car field for the start of the six-lap affair. This elevated Bryan Mann and Brandon Rawlings to the front row for the start, with Kevin Titman and Andrew Scheuerle on the second row and Peter Lack and Luke Oldfield bringing up the rear. Mann got the jump on the start and quickly settled into the race lead, and while Titman initially challenged Rawlings for second, Rawlings was able to secure the advantage by the time they reached the first corner. Titman tried to get underneath Rawlings in turn three but could not quite get the job done, while Luke Oldfield, who had a breath-taking run around the high line on the start to get ahead of both Peter Lack and Andrew Scheuerle before exiting turn two, was closing in fast. Scheuerle stayed within striking distance of Oldfield, and after a couple of laps slid beautifully underneath he Q36 racer as they navigated turn two. Oldfield quickly switched to the low line to slide underneath Scheuerle in turn three, sparks flying from under Oldfield as he mounted in the inside curb in a passing move that could have so very easily ended badly for both drivers. Oldfield was penalised one position after the conclusion of the race. Bryan Mann went on to take the win, declining the Kratzmann Caravans Challenge, with Brandon Rawlings and Kevin Titman completing the top three. Andrew Scheuerle was credited with fourth ahead of Luke Oldfield and Peter Lack.

Fourteen cars lined up for the start of the fifteen-lap B-Main. Anthony Lambert started from pole position with Callum Walker alongside and Paul Rooks and Brad Ayers close behind. Lambert got the better start when the lights went green and quickly settled into the race lead, with Walker in second and Rooks holding down third. Unfortunately the race was quickly brought under caution for a luckless Lachlan McHugh who had gotten too high in turn three and slammed the wall before coming to a stop in almost the same place where he landed after is earlier crash. McHugh was again unscathed but it was a very disappointing end to what was a very ordinary night for the young man who won the last round just a few short weeks ago. A full restart followed with Lambert and Walker again leading the field to the green. Lambert got the jump, but the race was quickly brought back under caution, the officials deeming Lambert to have jumped a little too soon and relegated him to the second row for the next restart. Paul Rooks was now on pole alongside Callum Walker and while Rooks got the initial jump when the lights went green, Walker fought back valiantly on the high side, eventually managing to secure the race lead. Rob Hamilton, Mark Pholi and Garry Jacobson had a great battle at the rear of the field until Pholi made his way past Hamilton and set out after Dave Fanning. Callum Walker soon caught lapped traffic, with Rooks closing in fast, and while it took a while to find the right way past Jacobson, Callum Walker was able to keep Rooks at bay long enough to take the win. Paul Rooks crossed the line in second ahead of Brad Ayers with Anthony Lambert securing fourth and the final transfer to the A-Main event. Richard Morgan finished fifth and led Mark Pholi, Kristy Bonsey, Dave Fanning and Garry Jacobson past the chequered flag. Rob Hamilton had a great race but sadly spun out in the final corner of the race and as such did not finish the event. Clem Hoffmans pulled out of the race after eleven laps, while Lachlan McHugh failed to complete a lap.

Eighteen cars rolled onto the track for the A-main event, to be contested over 30 gruelling laps, and while Andrew Scheuerle had already wrapped up the Championship, and Kevin Titman was reasonably comfortable in second, the battle for third and fourth (between Mitchell Gee and Brent Kratzmann), and fifth and sixth (between Andrew Liebke and Brandon Rawlings) were just some of the Championship battles yet to be decided going into the final race.

Bryan Mann and Brandon Rawlings shared the front row for the start of the A-Main event. Mann got the jump on the start and quickly settled into the race lead, calmly beginning to open a small margin over second placed Kevin Titman. Mid field chaos unfolded involving Dave Whell, Mitchell Gee and Steven Johnson, the trio drifting high entering turn two and leaving the bottom wide open. Brent Kratzmann and Andrew Marks were both quick to capitalise on the open door and both managed to slip through before Johnson, Gee and Whell sorted themselves out. Dan Murray managed to follow Marks under Whell and Gee, but tucked in behind Johnson as they raced down the back straight still on the opening lap. Andrew Scheuerle was up to third, behind Bryan Mann and Kevin Titman, while behind him Peter Lack and Luke Oldfield were having a heated battle over fourth and fifth, both having found their way in front of Brandon Rawlings, who was now defending his position from a very hard charging Brent Kratzmann. Behind Kratzmann Andrew Marks was trying to stay ahead of Steven Johnson, but Johnson was determined and after a couple of laps managed to race up the inside of Marks as they headed down the back straight, leaving Marks with Dan Murray and Mitchell Gee right on his tail, and Dave Whell just a car length or two further back. Gee had a big look on the inside of Murray in turn four, but Murray refused to surrender the position and fought back hard on the high side. The race was soon brought under caution when Paul Rooks and Dale Shilleto became stranded in turn four. Rooks restarted at the rear of the field while Shilleto was unfortunately out of the race, joining Anthony Lambert and Luke Oldfield, who had both, separately, pulled out of the event a few laps earlier, on the infield.

Bryan Mann led the restart from Kevin Titman, Andrew Scheuerle and Peter Lack with 22-laps still to run. Lack and Scheuerle had an intense battle, with positions changing several times while just outside the top five Dan Murray was putting all kinds of pressure on Andrew Marks, while Mitchell Gee searched for a way past them both. Gee eventually managed to slip underneath Murray in turn two, and while he had a big look under Marks as well he wasn’t able to pull off the pass. Gee kept the pressure on Marks, while Brandon Rawlings and Brent Kratzmann argued over positions a little closer to the front of the field. Brad Ayers brought the race under caution once more after coming to a stop on the bottom edge of the track in turn two. Ayers did not restart the event.

Bryan Mann again led the restart, this time with eighteen laps left to run, and with Kevin Titman still on his tail. Peter Lack had managed to secure the advantage over Andrew Scheuerle, while Rawlings challenged Kratzmann in turn two, successfully stealing fifth, while Mitchell Gee took to the high line in an effort to get past Andrew Marks. Gee ran wide in turn four, with Dan Murray, Dave Whell and Scott Doyle all trying to slip underneath. Gee nearly came together with Murray but managed to hang on to the advantage, while Doyle had a brilliant run on the low line to race under Whell and Murray and slot in behind Gee, as Gee again began closing the gap to Marks. It took a few laps but Gee caught Marks, slipping underneath as they raced through turns three and four. Gee immediately began pulling away, chasing after Steven Johnson and Brent Kratzmann and Brandon Rawlings, and leaving Marks to try and defend his position from Doyle, Whell and Murray. Doyle eventually got around Marks, but by this stage race leader Bryan Mann had caught lapped traffic and was searching for a way through, as his rivals drew ever closer. Titman tried to run around the outside of Mann in turn two, but got too high and gave Lack all the invitation he needed to steal second, while just half a lap later Lack initiated his own challenge on Mann as he had a big look up the inside of the leader as they exited turn four. Mann maintained the lead, while Titman managed to get back in front of Lack a few laps later, but it was the action unfolding behind them that was starting to steal the show. Mitchell Gee and Steven Johnson had caught the back of Brandon Rawlings and Brent Kratzmann, with Gee taking to the high line in a bold outside run. Johnson stuck to the low line as he and Gee ran either side of Rawlings though turn four. Johnson emerged in front of both Gee and Rawlings but contact with Kratzmann in turn two spelt disaster for all four cars. Johnson ended up up-side-down, while Gee and Rawlings also became involved in contact with Kratzmann. Johnson emerged from the wreck somewhat shaken and would be unable to restart the event, with Rawlings and Kratzmann both also out with just three laps left to run. Gee restarted at the rear of the field.

Bryan Mann once again led the restart from Kevin Titman, Peter Lack, Andrew Scheuerle, Scott Doyle and Andrew Marks. Marks lost positions to Dave Whell and Dan Murray when he ran too wide in turn two while Mitchell Gee was on a mission to make up as much ground as he could before the fall of the chequered flag. Bryan Mann went on to take the win ahead of Kevin Titman and Peter Lack, with Andrew Scheuerle and Scott Doyle completing the top five. David Whell finished sixth and led Dan Murray, Andrew Marks, Mitchell Gee, Callum Walker and Paul Rooks across the line. Brent Kratzmann, Steven Johnson, Brandon Rawlings, Brad Ayers, Dale Shilleto, Luke Oldfield and Anthony Lambert all failed to finish the event.

That wraps up the final round of the SuperCheap Auto Sprintcar series, with Andrew Scheuerle the official Series Winner. Kevin Titman was officially second ahead of Mitchell Gee, Brent Kratzmann and Andrew Liebke. Final Series standings were:
