Kicking Up The Dirt - 2013-2014 Season Finale
Joanne White posted Sunday May 25, 2014.

Jamie Bricknell, in the Titan Garages and Carports #36 racer, took the win in an action packed A-main event at SuperCheap Auto Archerfield Speedway last night, stealing the win from Australian Champion David Murcott in a heart-stopping move on the final corner of the race. Murcott managed to cross the line in second while Mick Sauer finished his first season of open Sprintcar competition with his first podium finish in the class when he crossed the line in third. Brodie Tulloch finished an impressive fourth, with both Sauer and Tulloch, who had both transferred from the B-Main, benefiting immensely from a six-car pile with just two laps to go. Allan Woods finished an impressive fifth, a spectacular result for Woods who only got his start in the A-Main event when Danny Reidy pulled out of the competition with engine dramas.

Twenty-Nine cars took to the track for qualifying, with David Murcott dominating from the moment he hit the track. Murcott topped the qualifying order with an 11.301 second laps, with Bryan Mann spectacular in second with an 11.366 second lap. Jamie Bricknell, Kevin Titman and Andrew Scheuerle rounded out the fastest five, with Peter Lack, Danny Reidy, Brent Aprile, Darren Jensen and Luke Oldfield completing the top ten qualifiers and detailing the main names to watch for the rest of the night. The top twenty-three cars were separated by less than one second, with four cars separated by five hundredths of a second. Fourteen cars managed to dip into the 11-second bracket proving that it was going to be a fast track for Round Fifteen of the KRE Sprintcar Series and the final night of the 2013-2014 race season.

Heat one started with New Zealander Andrew Marks from pole potion, with David Whell alongside. The pair crossed the line side-by-side with Whell then quickly pulling ahead and leading the field into turn one, with Marks in second. Danny Reidy and David Murcott both took to the high line right from the start, with Murcott quickly running around the outside of Wayne Iacono and setting out after Reidy and Melissa Boyes. Murcott soon found his way past Reidy, while Brent Kratzmann was impressive on the low line, slipping underneath Iacono in turn two and catching Reidy by the end of the first lap. Reidy and Kratzmann had a great battle, while in front of them Murcott searched for the way past Boyes, and towards the rear of the field Peter Lack and Dan Moes exchanged positions several times. Murcott managed to get past Boyes and began slowly closing the gap to Marks, while Lack caught the back of Kratzmann and began really putting the pressure on. David Whell went on to take the win, never seriously challenged for his position, with Andrew Marks across the line in second after a strong and consistent drive to hold off David Murcott. David Murcott officially finished third ahead of Melissa Boyes, Danny Reidy, Peter Lack, Brent Kratzmann, Dan Moes and Wayne Iacono.

Heat two started with Andrew Liebke and Allan Woods from the front row, with Mick Sauer and Mark Pholi right on their tails. Woods secured the lead as they headed into turn one, with Sauer slipping into second when Liebke got a little sideways in the first corner. Pholi came together with Liebke before barrel-rolling twice through the exit of the first corner. Pholi was not hurt in the crash, and while his main wing suffered significant damage, he was able to take part in the restart, albeit from the rear of the field. Liebke and Woods led the full restart, with Liebke this time getting the jump and securing the lead. Mick Sauer was beautiful on the low line, slipping underneath Woods through the opening corners to secure second, and while Woods fought back hard heading down the back straight, Sauer held on and left Woods to defend his position from a very hard charging Brent Aprile and Bryan Mann. Woods and Aprile came together in turn one of the second lap, with Aprile inverting the car just as Mick Sauer challenged Andrew Liebke for the lead and spun the Q79 racer in turn two. Both Sauer and Aprile were able to restart from the rear of the field as Liebke led the restart from Woods and Mann with nine laps left to run. Liebke got a brilliant start and had a great run out in front while behind him Woods was busy trying to keep Bryan Mann and Andrew Scheuerle at bay. Woods did a brilliant job to hold them off for several laps, while Liebke extended his lead, but eventually both Mann and Scheuerle found their respective ways past. Mann has been in particularly impressive form the past few race meetings and last night was no exception. The car was set up beautifully and Mann was faultless lap after lap, and while Liebke had about a quarter of a lap lead over Mann when Mann made his way into second, it only took a couple of laps for Mann to not only catch Liebke, but run around the outside and steal the lead just in time to take the chequered flag first. Bryan Mann took the win with Andrew Liebke officially second ahead of Andrew Scheuerle, Allan Woods, Mick Sauer, Brad Ayers, Stephen Greer, Mark Pholi, Darren Meehan and Brent Aprile.

Heat three saw Anthony Lambert and Ben Hilder from the front row with Lambert getting the jump on the start and immediately settling into the race lead. Hilder settled comfortably into second while Brodie Tulloch tried to run the high line through turn one, only to drift too high and allow Paul Morris, Luke Oldfield and Darren Jensen through. Morris, Oldfield and Jensen had a thrilling battle for the minor places, with Oldfield on the highline, Jensen down low and Morris running mid-track as the trio ran three-wide coming out of turn four. Oldfield won that battle, getting impressive drive on the high line to secure third, with Jensen quick to follow on the low line, the two then having a breath-taking battle over the minor places while behind them Brodie Tulloch made his way past Paul Morris. Oldfield soon caught Ben Hilder in second and really started putting the pressure on, while Jensen ran too high into turn three, slammed the wall a couple of times but managed to not only keep the car upright but moving too. Jensen lost a few positions but was able to continue the race without causing a stoppage, but found himself in a battle with Paul Morris, Jamie Bricknell and Kevin Titman. Jensen soon faded, the damage to his car making handling less than ideal, but the race was brought under caution with only a lap left to run when Kristy Bonsey spun the Q42 racer in turn four. Anthony Lambert led the restart with Luke Oldfield and Ben Hilder close behind, for the green-white-chequer two-lap race to the finish, with Jensen relegated to the rear of the field with a flat right rear tyre. Anthony Lambert went on to take the win ahead of Luke Oldfiled and Ben Hilder with Brodie Tulloch across the line in fourth and leading Paul Morris, Jamie Bricknell, Kevin Titman, Matthew Butler, Kristy Bonsey and Darren Jensen home.

Heat four started with Stephen Greer and Mick Sauer from the front row and Sauer getting the jump on the start. Darren Jensen, from position four, took to the high line to go around the outside of Greer, while Mark Pholi hugged the bottom of the circuit and tied to slip underneath the pair. Jensen emerged in front but contact between Greer and Pholi saw the pair tangle in turn two. Peter Lack was looking strong on the highline and was high enough to avoid the incident, while David Whell and Bryan Mann were both able to take quick evasive action as Greer and Pholi spun towards the low line, leaving Luke Oldfield nowhere to go. Neither Pholi nor Oldfield were able to restart the event. David Whell was elevated to pole position for the restart, with Mick Sauer alongside only this time it was Whell who got the jump on the start and settled into the race lead. Sauer held down second for a short while, but Darren Jensen and Peter Lack were both on a charge towards the front. Jensen made his way past Sauer and set out after Whell, while Bryan Mann started to work his way towards the front. Lack searched for a way past Sauer but when Sauer got a little too sideways in turn two Lack did everything he could to avoid contact but there was no time. Lack ended up spun to a stop in turn two, with Bryan Mann also looping the #16 racer but managing to keep the car running. Lack restarted at the rear of the field while Whell and Jensen led the field away. Jensen spent a couple of laps right on the tail of Whell, the two drivers putting on a spectacular show for the large crowd in attendance, with Jensen really putting the pressure on, only to run a fraction too wide in turn four and give Whell some breathing room, if only for a couple of laps before the pressure was once again on in full force. It was hard to take your eyes off the leading pair as Jensen held nothing back in a brilliant display of fierce, clean and competitive driving from both drivers that captivated the crowd, but it was also hard to ignore Peter Lack, who was on a mission from the rear of the field. Lack, in the always absolutely immaculately presented #58 racer, made his way past Wayne Iacono before gradually reeling in Bryan Mann and Mick Sauer. With the white flag in the air Lack made his move, a perfectly timed run on the low line, getting past both Mann and Sauer with less than a lap left to run to secure third. David Whell took the win after a nail-biting finish with Jensen, with Darren Jensen crossing the line in second ahead of Peter Lack, Mick Sauer, Bryan Mann, Wayne Iacono and Stephen Greer. Luke Oldfield and Mark Pholi did not finish the race.

Heat five started with Allan Woods and Andrew Liebke from the front row with Woods quickly securing the race lead and leaving Liebke to try to hold off Brent Kratzmann. As soon as the lights went green Kratzmann made his way to the low line and tried to run underneath Liebke through turn one. Liebke fought back hard but contact between the pair sent Liebke towards the fence where he spun to a stop and brought about the first of many stoppages that would plague this heat event. Liebke restarted at the rear of the field with Woods and Kratzmann now sharing the front row for the restart. Woods again got a great start and quickly secured the race lead but Danny Reidy was brilliant on the high line, making his way past both Paul Morris and Brent Kratzmann in the first two corners before challenging Woods for the lead. Unfortunately it was not meant to be and moments later Brent Kratzmann and David Murcott came together in turn four, Murcott running over the front end of Kratzmann’s #4 racer and both cars coming to a stop, and Brent Aprile spinning to avoid. All cars restarted at the rear of the field, with Woods now joined on the front row by Danny Reidy. Woods got the jump on the start but Reidy was too quick on the high line, stealing the lead before they hit turn three, while further back in the field Brent Kratzmann began working his way forward, as did David Murcott. Murcott and Andrew Liebke exchanged positions a couple of times before the race was brought under caution again, this time for the spun car of Kevin Titman in turn two. Finally with a lap on the board it was Danny Reidy who led the restart and dominated the race, while David Murcott skilfully weaved his way past the field, eventually making his way into second. Things nearly ended in disaster when Paul Morris attempted a bold inside passing move on Allan Woods through turn three, the pair making big contact through turn four, while Brent Aprile, Andrew Leibke and Brent Kratzmann came together in turn two. Aprile was impressive once he took to the high line, making his way past both Liebke and Kratzmann but the race was brought to a stop once more, within sight of the chequered flag, when Dan Moes ran too high in turn three, clipped the wall, and inverted the beautifully presented #60 racer. Danny Reidy was credited with the win, though a very hot engine held concerns about whether he would be able to finish the nights feature events. David Murcott was officially second ahead of Paul Morris, Allan Woods, Brent Aprile, Brent Kratzmann, Andrew Liebke, Kevin Titman and Darren Meehan. Dan Moes did not finish the event.

The sixth heat of the night, and the last heat of the season, started with Andrew Marks and Ben Hilder from the front row. The front row raced side-by-side into the first corner, but it was Hilder on the high line who managed to secure the race lead with Marks in second ahead of Brodie Tulloch in third. Hilder was doing a great job in the race lead but Marks was fighting hard and challenging for the lead. The race was soon brought under caution for the spun car of Melissa Boyes in turn four, with young Ben Hilder to lead the restart from Andrew Marks and Brad Ayers. Andrew Scheuerle managed to make his way in front of Anthony Lambert on the restart but the race was brought under caution once more, only a couple of laps in, for the spun car of Andrew Marks in turn four. Ben Hilder again led the restart with Brad Ayers and Brodie Tulloch right on his tail and Andrew Scheuerle on a mission to get to the front. Scheuerle managed to get past Tulloch and was putting all sorts of pressure on Ayers, while at the rear of the field Marks was trying to make up lost ground. With just three laps left to run the race was again brought to a stand-still, this time a red light stoppage for the inverted car of Matthew Butler in turn four. Butler was not injured in the crash but would take no further part in proceedings, while Jamie Bricknell, who had been battling with Butler before the crash, was relegated to the rear of the field for the restart. Ben Hilder went on to take the win with Andrew Scheuerle in second ahead of Anthony Lambert, Brad Ayers, Melissa Boyes, Brodie Tulloch, Andrew Marks, Kristy Bonsey and Jamie Bricknell. Matthew Butler did not finish the race.

David Murcott led the points chase heading into the Dash event, but drew position four in the pre-dash draw. Danny Reidy was then scheduled to start from pole position, but persistent engine dramas in the NQ5 racer saw Reidy pull out of the event before taking the green, handing pole to Andrew Scheuerle. Bryan Mann started out of position two but it was Scheuerle who got the jump on the start, Mann tried to go with him while Peter Lack had a brilliant drive underneath David Murcott has they headed down the back straight. When Mann made an uncharacteristic mistake in turn two, Lack was quick to capitalise and slip through, but Mann got him back only moments later with Murcott soon getting through too. Scheuerle may have been leading the event, but all eyes were on Mann, Murcott and Lack as they argued over who would share the front row with Scheuerle for the start of the A-Main event. Murcott tried to run underneath Mann into turn three, but drifted just a little up track in turn four, with Peter Lack making contact and spinning the #58 to a stop. Scheuerle led the restart while Mann and Murcott resumed their battle for second, with Murcott working the high line to get the job done. Andrew Scheuerle took the win, earning pole position for the A-Main event, with David Murcott to join him on the front row. Bryan Mann crossed the line third in the Dash with Jamie Bricknell fourth ahead of Peter Lack. Danny Reidy did not start the event.

Luke Oldfield and Paul Morris lined up alongside each other for the start of the B-main event. Oldfield got the jump when the lights went green, with Brent Kratzmann from the second row getting a great start and quickly securing second. Mick Sauer had a fantastic run on the low line to make his way in front of Brodie Tulloch and Allan Woods. Woods got caught on the highline, opening the door for several cars, with Andrew Liebke taking advantage and Andrew Marks trying to follow him through. Woods managed to stay ahead of Marks, and he and Liebke set out after Paul Morris in front of them, both getting by Morris before Woods set about finding a way past Liebke. A few laps in and the race was brought under caution for the spun car of Stephen Greer in turn four. With ten laps left to run it was Luke Oldfield who led the field away for the restart, with Brent Kratzmann and Brodie Tulloch close behind. Kratzmann and Tulloch had a thrilling battle over the minor places the moment the lights went green, the pair exchanging positions several times in the first few corners, with Kratzmann managing to hang on to the advantage. Another yellow light stoppage, this time for the spun car of Kristy Bonsey in turn three, with seven laps to run, bunched the field back up and when the race resumed it was the battle between Brodie Tulloch and Mick Sauer that captivated everyone's attention. Further back in the field Paul Morris was starting to climb his way back to the front of the field, a big inside passing move on Andrew Liebke as they raced down the back straight could have so easily brought both undone, but Morris managed to emerge in front, only for Liebke to spin moments later in turn four. Matthew Butler had nowhere to go and no time to react and collided with the stranded #47 racer of Liebke, leaving both cars with enough damage to end their night of competition. Luke Oldfield was unstoppable in the race lead with just three laps left to run, but Mick Sauer and Brent Kratzmann were not overly concerned with Oldfield and the race lead, the pair we plenty occupied in their own thrilling, breath-taking battle that lasted until the fall of the chequered flag. Luke Oldfield took the win with Brent Kratzmann doing a brilliant job to cross the line in second. Mick Sauer, crossed the line in third with Brodie Tulloch home in fourth and securing transfers to the A-main event. Allan Woods crossed the line in fifth, and with Danny Reidy out of the A-Main event, Woods would get the chance to start at the rear of the 18-car A-Main field. Paul Morris finished a very respectable sixth in the B-Main, and led Andrew Marks, Dan Moes, Stephen Greer and Kristy Bonsey across the line. Andrew Liebke, Matthew Butler, Wayne Iacono and Darren Meehan did not finish the fifteen-lap journey.

The A-Main field rolled onto the track for the last Sprintcar race of the 2013-2014 race season, with Andrew Scheuerle and David Murcott to lead the field away. Andrew Scheuerle and Luke Oldfield had already secured first and second overall in the KRE Sprintcar Series before last nights event even started, but the battle for third was going to go down to the wire with three cars, Darren Jensen, Kevin Titman and Danny Reidy, all vying for third place honours. With Scheuerle and Murcott from the front row there was never any doubt that the race was going to be frantic and while the leaders most certainly did not disappoint, the rest of the field made sure there was plenty happening to keep everyone entertained. Scheuerle got the jump on the start and quickly secured the race lead, opening a small margin while Bryan Mann, David Murcott and Jamie Bricknell fought over second. Kevin Titman and Peter Lack had a great battle for the minor places, while further back in the field Darren Jensen and Ben Hilder battled as they tried to find a way past Melissa Boyes, while Brent Kratzmann had a brilliant run on the low line and skilfully manoeuvred his way ever-closer to the front end of the field. Darren Jensen brought the race under caution when he spun the #75 racer in turn two with twenty-seven laps still to run.

Andrew Scheuerle led the restart with David Murcott and Bryan Mann close behind, but the race had barely started when Anthony Lambert, towards the tail of the field, looped the Q90 racer in turn four before he took the green. Scheuerle, Murcott and Mann again led the start but all eyes were drawn to Peter Lack on the high line. Lack is usually quite impressive on the high side and last night was no exception, with Lack being one of the few to consistently run the high line, especially on the starts, and this time it was Kevin Titman who was in his sights. Lack had the speed on the high side coming out turn two, though contact between two could have had disastrous results both. Fortunately both were able to escape without serious incident and neither lost a position. Lack managed to pull away a little, while Titman was left to battle with David Whell, Brad Ayers and Brent Kratzmann. The race was soon brought under caution again though, this time for Ben Hilder who had spun the #95 racer in turn three.

With twenty-three laps to run it was again Scheuerle, Murcott and Mann who led the way, but Peter Lack again took to the high line, this time to challenge Jamie Bricknell. Lack managed to steal fourth from Bricknell, only for Bricknell to fight back valiantly and steal his position back. Further back in the field Luke Oldfield was using the high line spectacularly but another yellow light stoppage, this time for Melissa Boyes who had slowed to a stop on the main straight, brought the race under caution once more.

Andrew Scheuerle led the restart but David Murcott was quick to steal the lead as they headed through turns one and two. Jamie Bricknell had a great run up to third while Peter Lack and Brent Kratzmann had a thrilling battle for the minor places, both having exceptional drives and really putting on a spectacular show for race fans. Back at the front of the field Jamie Bricknell was really putting the pressure on Andrew Scheuerle, with Bryan Mann right behind. Mann soon pulled out of the race with engine dramas, while Kevin Titman and Allan Woods had a great battle mid-field. With just six laps left to run there was another yellow light stoppage for the tangled cars of Peter Lack and David Whell and the spun car of Luke Oldfield.

David Murcott led the restart with Jamie Bricknell in second ahead of Andrew Scheuerle and Kevin Titman. The race for third between Scheuerle and Titman was only just starting to heat up, with Titman having a brilliant run on the low line. Scheuerle fought back hard and managed to maintain his position, though neither driver let up, two of the strongest contenders on the local scene holding nothing back. Unfortunately the race was soon brought to a stop for the up-side-down car of Luke Oldfield in turn two, and while Luke was not hurt in the incident, his race was over just two laps from the chequered flag.

Murcott led the restart, while Scheuerle and Titman resumed their battle, this time with Brent Kratzmann on their tail and ready to join the fight for third. Ben Hilder spun the #95 racer to a stop in turn one, bringing the race under caution, and David Murcott again led the restart, still with two laps left to run. Kratzmann took to the high line in turn two in a brilliant run around the outside of Titman and Scheuerle, slammed the back straight wall before contact with Scheuerle entering turn three set off a chain reaction that would change the course of the entire event. Kratzmann and Scheuerle became entangled and while Kevin Titman tried to go around, but there wasn't quite enough time or space to pull it off and contact with Kratzmann was enough to tip the Titman car. Brad Ayers also had nowhere to go and collided with Kratzmann and Scheuerle, while Mick Sauer was able to sneak through on the low line. Brent Aprile rode the right rear of Brodie Tulloch as they tried to take evasive action and while Tulloch was able to drive away Aprile was collected by Darren Jensen while David Whell and Peter Lack took evasive action. Scheuerle, Kratzmann, Titman, Aprile, Ayers and Jensen all stopped in the incident but all were able to restart at the rear of the field.

David Murcott led the restart with Jamie Bricknell on his tail and Mick Sauer and Brodie Tulloch arguing over third. Peter Lack took to the highline on the restart and had a great battle with both David Whell and Allan Woods, but it was the race to the chequered flag that held everyone’s attention. David Murcott made one small mistake in the final corner of the race, opening the door just a fraction, but that was all the invitation Jamie Bricknell needed and he swiftly slipped underneath Murcott in a perfectly timed passing move to steal the win from the Australian Champion as they crossed the line. Jamie Bricknell, in the Titan Garages #36 racer was credited with the win ahead of David Murcott in second. Mick Sauer secured an impressive third place finish, his first podium finish in a Sprintcar A-Main and the perfect way to end his rookie season in the division. Brodie Tulloch crossed the line in fourth, his best finish at the Brisbane venue this season, with Allan Woods officially fifth. Sauer, Tulloch and Woods all transferred from the B-Main and did a magnificent job in the carnage filled A-Main event to secure very impressive results to end their season on a high. Peter Lack finished sixth ahead of Brent Kratzmann, David Whell, Brad Ayers, Brent Aprile, Darren Jensen, Kevin Titman and Andrew Scheuerle. Ben Hilder, Luke Oldfield, Anthony Lambert, Bryan Mann and Melissa Boyes all failed to finish the event.

And with that, we wrap up the 2013-2014 Sprintcar racing season. It has certainly been one of the biggest, most exciting seasons with plenty of spectacular racing action, an enormous list of achievements that each driver and team can be very proud of.
