Kicking Up The Dirt - 2014 Queensland Sprintcar Title Night Two
Joanne White posted Sunday April 27, 2014.

Robbie Farr is the 2014 Queensland Sprintcar Champion after taking the win in an action-packed feature event at SuperCheap Auto Archerfield last night. Farr inherited the race lead after both David Murcott and James McFadden exited the race in separate incidents, both while leading the race, and from then on dominated the event, with Bryan Mann having a brilliant run and keeping the pressure on the race leader. Mann finished second while Luke Oldfield managed to cross the line in third ahead of Garry Brazier, who had transferred from the B-Main and had moved as high as third in the A-Main event for a number of laps. Andrew Scheuerle rounded out the top five finishers in a race that saw nine cars fail to make it to end.

Track conditions last night were vastly different from that which the drivers had to contend with on Friday night, with last nights racing surface smooth and slick with multiple racing lines. After some quick hot lapping sessions to warm the cars up it was straight into the heat racing action, with all the grids re-inverted after the first night of competition.

Heat seven for the weekend started with Brad Ayers from pole position, after Andrew Marks elected to start rear of the field, with Jordyn Brazier alongside. Ayers got the jump on the start and quickly settled into the race lead while Terry Bracken stayed low on the track to slip underneath Brazier through the opening corners and had a big look underneath Ayers as well. Kevin Titman tried to follow Bracken on the low side but it was the drama unfolding behind him that brought the race to a stop. Melissa Boyes tried to run the gutter underneath David Murcott, Bryan Mann and Danny Reidy through the opening two corners. It was a breath-taking and bold move, but contact with Reidy in turn two, that then resulted in contact between Reidy and Mann, would bring the race to a stop. Reidy suffered damage to his main wing and a flat right rear tyre in the contact with Mann, while Mann ended up slamming the concrete wall coming out of two and came to a sudden stop. Mann restarted at the rear of the field for full the restart with Ayers and Brazier to lead the way and Reidy unfortunately out of the race. Ayers again got the jump on the start with Brazier settling into second. Bracken tried to repeat his low line pass from the first start but Kevin Titman was ready and managed to get there first. David Murcott charged around the high line, making his way ever closer to the front of the field. Brazier put all sorts of pressure on Ayers as they fought over the race lead, oblivious to the battle brewing behind them as Murcott closed the gap to Titman. Melissa Boyes brought the race under caution when she spun in turn four, bunching the field up for the restart. Ayers led them away when the lights went green, and managed to open a small lead while Kevin Titman challenged Jordyn Brazier for second. Brad Ayers went on to take the win with Jordyn Brazier in second ahead of Kevin Titman, David Murcott, Terry Bracken, Bryan Mann, Andrew Marks and Melissa Boyes. Danny Reidy did not finish the event.

Dan Moes and Peter Lack shared the front row for the start of heat eight with Lack getting the jump on the start and quickly opening quite a sizable lead over Moes in second. As the laps wore on Lack kept increasing the margin back to second, and had remarkably built up a half a lap clearance after only five laps. While Lack ran away from the field the battle over the minor places began to heat up with Dan Moes in the immaculately presented #60 racer leading the way. Garry Brazier, who had a big task ahead of him after not contesting the first night of competition, started at the rear of the field and slowly began working his way forward, as Robbie Farr and Paul Morris fought over the minor places. Dan Moes soon found himself with both Shaun Dobson and Robbie Farr on his tail with a few laps left to run. Dobson and Farr held nothing back but Moes managed to hang on long enough to secure second. Peter Lack took the win, with a margin of 6.577 seconds, or approximately two thirds of a lap, with Dan Moes in second and Shaun Dobson officially third. Robbie Farr crossed the line in fourth and led David Whell, Sammy Walsh, Garry Brazier, Luke Oldfield and Paul Morris home.

Heat nine started with Andrew Liebke and Paul Rooks from the front row, both drivers remembering all too well the near disaster that unfolded when they shared the front row for a heat on Friday night. Fortunately this time things worked out better for all involved. Liebke got the jump initially, but Rooks was quick on the high line and swiftly ran around the outside to secure the race lead by the end of the first corner. Brodie Tulloch tried to follow Rooks on the high line, but couldn’t quite get past Liebke, with Tulloch then switching quickly to the low line to secure his position in front of Darren Jensen. Andrew Scheuerle tried to find a way past Mark Pholi, while Liebke and Tulloch argued over second. Liebke got a fraction sideways in turn four, making contact with Tulloch, with both drivers losing positions to Jensen and Pholi before Tulloch spun in turn one and brought the race under caution. Paul Rooks led the restart, doing a magnificent job out in front with Darren Jensen close on his tail. Andrew Scheuerle and James McFadden made quick work of slipping by Andrew Liebke, with Brent Aprile soon following them through. Liebke was left to battle with Tulloch at the rear of the field. Paul Rooks went on to take the win, never seriously challenged for the lead, with Darren Jensen a solid second ahead of Mark Pholi, Andrew Scheuerle, James McFadden, Brent Aprile, Brodie Tulloch and Andrew Liebke.

The tenth heat of the weekend saw Jordyn Brazier and Andrew Liebke off the front row for the start, with Kevin Titman and Darren Jensen close behind. Brazier got the initial jump on the start but Liebke managed to catch him as the pair raced side-by-side into turn one, with Brazier emerging just in front and Liebke forced to settle for second as Titman and Jensen continued to argue over third. Titman won that battle and set his sights on Liebke, with Jensen right behind, and while it took Titman a few laps to find the best way past Liebke in the #47 racer, he was able to work the low line beautifully through turns three and four and slip underneath Liebke. Jensen followed a lap later while James McFadden was busy with Danny Reidy on his tail and trying to navigate around Liebke in front. Reidy soon dropped back just enough to take the pressure off McFadden and became embroiled in his own battle with back-markers David Murcott and Brent Apile. McFadden spent several laps on the tail of Liebke before fading a car length or two and watching Liebke, waiting for the right opportunity, and with two laps left to run starting picking up the pace and putting the challenge to Liebke. With only one lap left to run McFadden really turned up the pressure and as the pair entered turn three for the final time, McFadden slid underneath Liebke and into fourth. While Liebke valiantly tried to fight back as they exited turn four, there was little he could do. Jordyn Brazier went on to take the win with Kevin Titman in second ahead of Darren Jensen, James McFadden, Andrew Liebke, Danny Reidy, David Murcott and Brent Aprile.

Heat eleven started with Peter Lack and Brad Ayers from the front row, after Andrew Marks again elected to start rear of the field, with Lack getting the jump on the start and settling into the race lead. Terry Bracken was absolutely breath-taking on the high line and by the time the field entered turn one Bracken was committed to the high side and was running around the outside of Bryan Mann, Brad Ayers and Paul Morris to secure second by the end of the second corner of the race. Shaun Dobson tried the high line too, before switching to the low line and trying an inside passing move on Brad Ayers through turn three. Unfortunately contact between Dobson and Ayers sent Ayers towards the turn four wall where he inverted the NQ11 racer. Ayers was not injured in the incident but would be out of competition for the rest of the night. Peter Lack and Terry Bracken led the restart with nine laps left to run while further back in the field Bryan Mann, Shaun Dobson and Robbie Farr were putting on a spectacular show for race fans. The race was brought under caution again only a couple of laps later when Melissa Boyes spun in turn three and was clipped by Andrew Marks. Boyes restarted at the rear of the field while Marks was forced out of he race with a damaged front end and steering. Peter Lack again led the restart with Terry Bracken right on his tail while Bryan Mann tried to find a way past Paul Morris as Robbie Farr slipped underneath Shaun Dobson. Morris, Mann and Farr put on a great show for the large SuperCheap Auto Archerfield Speedway crowd with Mann eventually slipping underneath Morris only a lap before Farr ran around the outside. Peter Lack went on to take the win, this time with a quarter of a lap margin over Terry Bracken in second. Bryan Mann crossed the line in third with Robbie Farr, Paul Morris, Shaun Dobson and Melissa Boyes rounding out the finishers. Andrew Marks and Brad Ayers did not finish the event.

The twelfth and final heat event of the weekend saw Paul Rooks and Dan Moes share the front row for the start with Rooks getting the better start and securing the lead by the time they hit turn one. Moes on the other hand was not prepared to settle for second without a fight and managed to find more drive on the high side in turn two to blast around the outside of Rooks and steal the race lead. Rooks settled into second while Mark Pholi had a brilliant run on the inside gutter, slipping by virtually half the field in turn two with a perfectly timed passing move. Pholi slipped underneath David Whell in turn three before Whell switched to the low line and tried to regain his position through turn four, but to no avail. Andrew Scheuerle was also in the mix, patiently working the low line and then using every inch of the track trying to find his way forward. Garry Brazier was methodical and after starting rear of the field, really showed just a hint of what was to come in the feature events as he weaved his way past car after car. The race was brought to a sudden stop though when Mark Pholi inverted the Q14 racer in turn two. Pholi was not injured in the incident and even managed to start at the rear of the field and complete the final six laps of the race. Dan Moes led the restart with Paul Rooks still in second ahead of Brodie Tulloch and Garry Brazier. Tulloch slipped underneath Rooks once the race got underway, with Brazier quick to follow and as Tulloch and Brazier closed in on the tail of Moes and the race lead, the battle for second really started to heat up. Dan Moes went on to take the win, his first in open Sprintcar competition, with Garry Brazier eventually getting the better of Brodie Tulloch to finish second. Tulloch crossed the line in third and led Andrew Scheuerle, Paul Rooks, Luke Oldfield, David Whell, Sammy Walsh and Mark Pholi across the line.

Bryan Mann, Shaun Dobson, Kevin Titman and Terry Bracken took to the track for the Bronze Shootout with local stars Kevin Titman and Bryan Mann topping the time chart and transferring to the Silver Shootout. In fact, Titman beat Mann by just 0.001 seconds, with Shaun Dobson less than two tenths of a second slower. Dobson and Bracken would return to the infield for the remainder of the Shootout events, and start the A-Main event from positions seven and eight respectively.

Andrew Scheuerle and James McFadden joined Kevin Titman and Bryan Mann on the track for the Silver Shootout, with James McFadden a class above the rest and securing fastest time. His time of 12.095 seconds beat Bryan Mann’s 12.311 with both drivers transferring to the Gold Shootout. Andrew Scheuerle beat Kevin Titman but both cars would return to the infield while the Gold Shootout took place and would start the A-Main event from positions five and six respectively.

The Gold Shootout hit the track with Bryan Mann and James McFadden joined by David Murcott and Robbie Farr. At the end of the qualifying laps the four drivers were separated by less than three tenths of a second but it was James McFadden who had managed to secure fast time and pole position for the A-Main race. David Murcott crossed the line second quickest and would share the front row with McFadden for the start of the Title race. Robbie Farr and Bryan Mann would start side-by-side on the second row of the A-Main grid after finishing third and fourth in the Gold Shootout.

But before the Queensland Title race could get underway, there was a very important 15-lap B-Main event to be contested, with the top four finishers to transfer to the main event. Danny Reidy lead the field from pole position with Sammy Walsh alongside and Darren Jensen and Paul Morris close behind. Garry Brazier started from position eleven at the rear of the field and was on a mission from the first fall of the green flag. Danny Reidy got the jump on the start and quickly settled into the race lead with Sammy Walsh in second. Paul Rooks had a brilliant run on the low line past Paul Morris and David Whell, only for Morris to power around the outside and regain his position. The race was barely one lap old when the yellow caution lights came out for Andrew Marks who had collided with the turn two wall after contact with Melissa Boyes. Marks was not injured but his Queensland Title weekend was over. Reidy and Walsh led the restart with Darren Jensen right behind while Paul Rooks, David Whell and Paul Morris had a close battle. Garry Brazier began working his way forward, getting past Melissa Boyes, Dan Moes and Andrew Liebke less than a lap into the restart. Brazier spent a couple of laps searching for a way past David Whell, eventually managing to get the job done not all that long before Dan Moes rode the right rear of Andrew Liebke in turn four and slammed the wall. Moes was unable to continue the event but did walk away from the impact. Reidy, Walsh and Jensen again led the restart while Garry Brazier used the bunched up field to his advantage until the race was brought under caution once more, this time for the spun car of Andrew Liebke in turn four. Liebke had tried to keep the car going but would have driven head first into the fast approaching leaders so stopped against the turn four wall. With nine laps still to run Danny Reidy again led the field way and Garry Brazier again used the restart to his advantage. Reidy went on to take the win ahead of Sammy Walsh with Garry Brazier up to third. Darren Jensen crossed the line in fourth, securing the final transfer to the A-Main event with Paul Morris officially fifth. Paul Rooks crossed the line in sixth and led David Whell, Andrew Liebke and Melissa Boyes across the line. Dan Moes and Andrew Marks did not finish the event.

The A-Main was one of those events that just leaves you a little bit dumbfounded. The action started even before the green when, as the eighteen cars were being started, the throttle on Danny Reidy’s racer became jammed. Chaos unfolded and Reidy did exceptionally well to avoid other competitors and push vehicles alike and pull the car up. Officials and Reidy’s crew worked feverishly to rectify the problem but unfortunately ran out of time and the luckless Reidy was forced to watch the A-Main event unfold without him. In Reidy’s absence though Paul Morris, as first reserve got his chance to start in the Title race, at the very back of the field.

James McFadden and David Murcott led the field around to the start, with Murcott getting a brilliant start on the highline and quickly settling into the race lead. Bryan Mann tried to go with him but couldn’t quite get past McFadden, who very quickly found himself with both Mann and Robbie Farr all over his tail tank. Further back in the field Shaun Dobson, Luke Oldfield and Terry Bracken were having a thrilling battle, with Brent Aprile soon joining in. Oldfield and Aprile pulled away a little from the others, embroiled in their own fierce battle and the show they put on as they began navigating their way closer to the front of the field was truly breath-taking. The pair often ran side-by-side and both easily swapped between high and low lines to weave through the traffic. Back at the front of the field David Murcott entered lapped traffic after just a few laps and was looking very much in control of the race when his engine suddenly and unexpectedly cut out and Murcott slowed to a stop in turn two. Unable to get the A1 car to re-fire, Murcott was out of the race, with James McFadden to inherit the race lead.

McFadden led the restart with Bryan Mann and Robbie Farr close behind and Garry Brazier up to eleventh. Luke Oldfield and Andrew Scheuerle, two of the front runners in the local Sprintcar series and club championship, were now in a wheel-to-wheel battle that captivated the crowd. Shaun Dobson and Brent Aprile were not far behind, both coming on strong and holding nothing back, While Garry Brazier quietly went about business and moved several positions closer to the front. The battle between Oldfield and Scheuerle, who were fast closing in on Kevin Titman, was one that demanded attention. Oldfield ran the highline perfectly while Scheuerle was magnificent on the bottom, and while Oldfield managed to pull away slightly from Scheuerle he was soon right on the tail of Titman and determined to get past. Oldfield attempted to slide underneath Titman in turn three but Titman came off second best when contact between the two ended with Titman in the turn three wall. Brent Aprile spun the #9 racer in an effort to avoid the stranded Titman racer, while Sammy Walsh and Peter Lack, who, like Reidy, has been having an extended run of unfortunate luck, came together in turn three. Fortunately no one was hurt in the incident but Peter Lack was unable to take part in the restart while Kevin Titman and Brent Aprile restarted at the rear of the field.

With 25 laps left to run it was James McFadden who led the field away once more, with Bryan Mann, Robbie Farr and Luke Oldfield hot on his heels and Garry Brazier up to an incredible sixth. On the restart Brazier wasted no time in moving past Andrew Scheuerle and into fifth, with the upcoming battle with Luke Oldfield set to get people talking. Terry Bracken and Shaun Dobson had a thrilling battle mid-field while race leader James McFadden entered lapped traffic after only a few short laps, with Bryan Mann and Robbie Farr quick to follow. As Mann tried to find a way around a lapped car, Farr moved ever closer and while Mann found a way past the lapped car in turn four he had lost a little momentum and by the time the trio hit turn one Farr ran around the outside of the lapped car before switching swiftly to the low line to go underneath Mann and steal second. Luke Oldfield followed soon after only moments before the race was brought under caution for the stranded car of Sammy Walsh on the back straight.

James McFadden led the restart from Robbie Farr, Bryan Mann, Luke Oldfield and Garry Brazier, and with just eighteen laps to run Brazier was turning up the heat. A beautiful inside passing move through turn one on the restart saw him move past Oldfield and into fourth, but the battle between these two was only just beginning. Oldfield fought back hard, while further back in the field Mark Pholi, Jordyn Brazier, Paul Morris, Darren Jensen and Brent Aprile navigated turn four together in a close, chaotic battle. Two laps later Jordyn Brazier lost his front end heading down the back straight and, unable to get the car off the track, slowed to a stop in turn three. Unfortunately Paul Morris and race leader James McFadden, who had been approaching the back-markers to put them a lap down, had nowhere to go and both slammed into the stranded car. All three cars were unable to restart the event.

Robbie Farr inherited the race lead with Bryan Mann and Garry Brazier close behind and Luke Oldfield in fourth. Andrew Scheuerle, in fifth, had one big look underneath Oldfield before fading back and into his own battle with Shaun Dobson, while Oldfield set about chasing down Brazier. The last fifteen laps saw some close and thrilling racing amongst the remaining ten cars, with several intense battles unfolding right through the field. Lapped traffic again played a part in determining the minor places, with Luke Oldfield managing to slip in between Brazier and Mann when all three found themselves momentarily behind a lapped car. Robbie Farr went on to take the win, his fourth Queensland Sprintcar Title in five years, and broke SuperCheap Auto Archerfield Speedway Promotor John Kelly’s record of four Queensland Titles at the same time. Bryan Mann finally managed to shake some of the bad luck that has plagued the team of late and put in a truly magnificent drive this weekend to claim a very hard-fought, well-deserved and popular second with Luke Oldfield securing third. Garry Brazier crossed the line in fourth, none to happy with Oldfield, with Andrew Scheuerle putting in another consistent performance to cross the line in fifth. Shaun Dobson had a big drive in the #95 Motorguard Motorsport racer to finish an impressive sixth and led Brent Aprile, Darren Jensen, Mark Pholi and Brodie Tulloch across the line. James McFadden, Jordyn Brazier, Paul Morris, Terry Bracken, Sammy Walsh, Kevin Titman, Peter Lack, David Murcott and Danny Reidy all failed to finish the very hectic A-Main race.

Sprintcars Queensland would like to congratulate Robbie Farr on yet another Queensland Title win, and all of the competitors this weekend for helping put on a brilliant show. Last nights event was the fifth night of Sprintcar racing in nine days so Sprintcars Queensland will take next weekend off before returning to SuperCheap Auto Archerfield Speedway on Saturday 10 May 2014.
